>> Why people would rip JVP for stating that VFP programmers would be wise to learn something else is beyond me.

This is not why JVP was being slapped around. He was being slapped around for saying things like *everyone* should move to Product X version 1 *right now*, that there is *zero* opportunity cost to do so, and that VFP is doomed to imminent death.

In the interim, after being repeatedly called an ass, a fabricating liar, and a scum bag, it turns out he's NOW saying the equivelent of "people are well advised to broaden their skillsets", and "moving to Product X Version 1 isn't going to be good for everybody right now". That seems entirely reasonable now, but it took freaking days to hammer home that for developers, these are engineering decisions, and that shallow views such as those of JVP's original statements are entirely unsupported and unsupportable on principles.

As the so-called "poster boy for myopic thinking" I can tell you that had this been a professional organization with JVP as he is, (like a professional engineer, a medical professional, or similar) then we'd be in the process of throwing him out for unethical behavior *and* breach of conduct.

In closing, it may seem that way, but it's never been an issue of JVP saying "VFP programmers would be wise to learn something else".

>I was about to post similar comments to yours. I have watched this discussion turn into nothing but personal attacks and actually find it funny. Although I can tell that I have a much darker side to my sense of humor than you do.

>Why people would rip JVP for stating that VFP programmers would be wise to learn something else is beyond me. I agree with your statement of 1996 as the heydey of Foxpro usage. It was about '98 when I would discuss my resume with recruiters and was told that most of the VFP work they had was to support a VFP app while it was being rewritten in VB. I don't know if that had anything to do with Y2K, but I believe that after Y2K was when corporate VFP work had just about completely dried up.

>It has gotten to the point that when you discuss with VFP people, if they know of one VFP app being written or one shop hiring, it's something they grab onto with lots of gusto. They are the type who argue with and about the person who delivers a message about using something other than VFP.

>By the way, what is the Valley like now? Is the fallout still occuring? LA seems to have dusted it self off, but I think like many other cities it will take a longggg time for a lot of unemployeed folks to find jobs.

>>Dropping VFP from higher education is not unexpected in my book. It seems this is the first time the academic world agrees with industry. There is less and less work for VFP available. That is reality and difficult to argue with. Anyone who thinks otherwise is having delusions! I am speaking of VFP opportunities, which began in 1995 through today – there is a general decline. The peak was reached during 1996 from the data I have.

>>By the way I have been given an offer to teach at Chico State University. My wife and I are discussing this possibility. If I do not do it now I will when I retire in a few years. I can teach History, Political Science and Application Development. Perhaps a strange combination but interesting. Should I teach VFP because I like it or something relative that will assist the student in the “real world”? My dream is to retire in Spain and play flamenco guitar, which I do here on the West Coast. I am fed up with Silicon Valley and what it has become.
>>John, you have contributed a good deal to the VFP community. You have friends and “non friends”. Your personal attacks, terminology and choice of words used to express your viewpoint turn off many people. You are like the “junk yard dog”, you will not let go until it suits you. Although I agree with your message and have stated so your manner can elicit negativity and personal attack. Soon this forum is like a hen house under attack from “the fox”.

>>It does not take long before it seems like your relationship with certain forum members is similar to the marriage of Virginia Wolfe and her husband. Now who started the name calling and why? It is long forgotten but the fight goes on. Any word may be taken out of context and examples are used that provoke more dissatisfaction. It becomes like a feeding frenzy of sharks and nothing productive comes of it. Perhaps that is reality and will not change. I can hope it can improve though. Just call me the eternal optimist! :)
