We use West-Wind WConnect. Really great. VFP7 and Wconnect together
are a combination to easily create powerful and stunningly fast
applications at low cost (compared to most client/server databases)

I am working with Fox since 1994. Since that time and even before
we had theese rumors. And I have to tell You, I am fed up of that.
If more people would just buy VFP instead of thinking years about
the maybe's there would not be any reason to discuss about that at all
anymore. BTW VFP 8 is just in production.
The internet and all techniques that come with it are developing so fast (just think of WebServices) that if You develop an application today It might be outdated within three years anyway.
And even even even even if if if there will be no new version.
VFP7 is a fantastic product and You could still carry on producing
if noone would produce it anymore.
So just do it!
