You are exactly correct. Remember that the people who are the ministers, popes, pastors, preacheers, etc are men and women and suspectable to error as any human is. Many times these people claim things as the "word of God" when it isn't. That's one reason there are so many different denominations.
For example, some Christian religions teach that you need faith and good works to be saved. Others say works don't matter, its all by the grace of God. Why is this the case? Because some human interpretted the Bible the way they wanted, not the way God want's it interpretted.
