Place the checkbox(or any other control) on a frame control, then set Frame1.Enabled = False. Controls on disabled frames are essentially disabled as well, but still look enabled (as in not grayed out). This works better on comboboxes, too, as a Locked combobox can still produce a dropdown list.

Just change the necessary properties on the frame if you don't want a box surrounding the control.
