Why not just ...

LOCAL llSendUpdates
llSendUpdates = CURSORGETPROP("SendUpdates")
CURSORSETPROP("SendUpdates",.F.)
TABLEUPDATE()
CURSORSETPROP("SendUpdates",m.llSendUpdates)

In other words, prevent VFP from committing changes, do a tableupdate and then allow VFP to resume committing changes?
