Try:

?SET( 'PRINTER', 1 )
?SET( 'PRINTER', 2 )
?SET( 'PRINTER', 3 )

On my machine I get nothing for the first command but printer strings for the second and third, so SYS(6) may be keying off SET( 'PRINTER', 1 ). However, I'm not sure on this and maybe others can give more info.
