Well, for my own purposes, I use "<", since I don't mind if anybody uses a resolution
larger than 800 x 600. For your purposes, the requirements might be different.
I don't see why there should be a problem on 17" monitors - except for the fact that the happy owner of such a monitor would have a tendency to use a larger resolution.
