Another alternative (instead of the EditBox, suggested in the other replies) is to set the ControlSource to something like padr(MyMemo, 100).
This will show the first 100 characters in the memo; in my system, the user sees the remainder in an EditBox outside the grid, when selecting the corresponding record.
