My feeling its that the rebranding has more to do with the fox picture.
A sentence saying "Powered by Microsoft Visual FoxPro" was not really a problem.
But the VFP brand include the fox head graphical representation and I think this is where the re-branding occur. You can not alter the registred logo, and using the fox picture was in fact a rebranding (redesign) of the official fox logo.
The use of a capture of the VFP splash screen (instead of a fox picture) may not have cause this legal problem????
