Updating KDE on SuSE used to be a piece of cake. All one had to do was run YOU (YaST Online UPdate) and migrate to SuSE's ftp KDE update site. On that site was a script which YOU would run. It would download all the files and the install them IN THE CORRECT ORDER. Not any more. They probably didn't retain enough web people to keep that feature active. Installing KDE3 files in the correct order is essential to avoid descrepencies, but the use of --Force is still required. Here is one URL which descibes the process.

Subject: RE: [SLE] Suse 7.3 Updating to KDE 3. How?

yep, on Suse 8 beta 7, Yast (curses mode or X mode) doesn't let you upgrade
locally as far as I can see.

I upgraded to KDE3 stable like this:
get all rpms
then rpm -Uvh --force on the rpms
in this order
1) all QT stuff
2) kdelibs stuff
3) kdebase stuff
all the rest
it worked just peachy
Good luck.
