In addition to Larry's comments, some display adapters allow you to define a "virtual" desktop size - typically 4x the actual dimensions of your monitor, or even larger. The monitor then displays a selected portion of this virtual desktop.

Have you tried working with negative screen positions rather than large positive ones? You don't want your app to break just because someone got a hot new 50" plasma monitor ;-)
