Larry,

Sorry that you are up at this time of night and I come from left field with a question, but I saw that you were familiar with installshield from this thread and wanted to know if you were aware of anywhere in the help, on-line, etc. that the files (vfp) requires to be installed on a machine are.

I am using Installshield 7.0 not the VFP version and I have most of the generic self installing merge modules (files) but that doesn't complete the pie (after testing an install on a non-vfp machine). The goal is a setup tht can be run from a network while at any user workstation

Any guidance would be appreciated

Dave

>Rex,
>No you don't need to spend any more moeny if you don't want to. ISE Limited Edition gives you everything you need to create a distribution package for your application. However, there are limits as to what you can do in you setup application.
>
>1. No environment variables. - You can't use ISE LE to create new variables you may need for your application.
>2. No dependency wizards. - ISE can scan you project and determine what DLLs and OCXs you use and add them to the distribution package. It can also scan you system as you run your application to determine that information. ISE LE can not. You have to know what files you need.
>3. No upgrade path. - This is my biggest gripe. If your application already exists as a previous version, ISE LE will not overwrite it. It displays a message and the user has to uninstall the previoss version and then attempt the new install. It's only an annoyance but a big one (IMO).
>4. No support for custom dialogs. - ISE gives you the ability to change the text for dialogs.
>
>There are a few other things that ISE LE doesn't allow but none stop you from creatijng a working distribution package. Most are aesthetic in nature. Some (like the dependency wizard) are for convenience sake and there are work arounds.
>
>There is one that is a show stopper and it should be (I'm hoping) corrected in a future update of ISE LE. That is there is no support for explicitly selecting the WinXP operating system. In order to do this, you have to select All OSes as the target. If you want to exclude 9X or ME, this work around is not an option.

>>Hi Ken,
>>
>>This seems like great news!
>>
>>However, I understood that when I purchased the 'Professional' version of VFP, the product would be able to handle the distribution of my application.
>>
>>So now you are telling me that after spending $A605.00 upgrading from version 5 to version 7 VFP, I need to spend another $A500.00 just to get a program that will adequately handle the distribution of my product.
>>
>>To me, that doesn't sound like good financial advice. Sure, if I worked in a large software development house with unlimited funds it probably wouldn't be an issue.
>>
>>I would be interested in knowing what the rest of the VFP developer community thinks about all this!
