Like Hilmar, my first guess was buffering. But you say it is set to 1.

Then I wonder if there is a field validation rule that is failing, but you should get a message in that case.

If the file was readonly, you wouldn't be able to modify the fields in the browse.

I don't know where else to have you look...can you browse the table and change any of the fields, and get the changes to stick?
