It would seem that something else is amiss with your server then. I have transferred a complete database among 3 different instances of SQL Server on 3 different computers and never had a problem. Does the dbo user exist in your model database? I haven't installed SQL Server too much, but I always have a dbo on a default installation. I would suggest reinstalling SQL Server on the new server and trying the backup/restore again.
