>I have a form that simulates the Command Box. In this form I can run any VFP procedure or function that is available a VFP EXE. For example, and this is only one example of a multitude, I can change the structure of a table....or I can guide a user through this over the telephone. This is possible through macro substitution. Can something like this be done in C++?

>The point is, there are things that VFP can do better and there are things that C++ can do better. Now, I've never used Visual C++, so I honestly can't say for sure. So maybe you are right, C++ is better in every way (what was your answer to the above example?). But, if that is true, why don't you keep it to yourself? I personally have spent the last 2.5 years developing a system in VFP. That is a fact that will not change. It is a data-intensive application. Everyone involved is generally delighted with the system. Am I going to do a re-write in C++? No. No time. I am adding to the system on a daily basis. Our industry changes too fast to allow me to put a freeze on the system. So what is the other option? Hire a C++ programmer to do the re-write while I carry-on? He would never catch-up. So I guess we'd have to hire a team of C++ programmers. This is not just not going to happen. So why start a "C++ is better that VFP" discussion? This is a VFP thread. Lets leave
>other languages out of it. If some of the consultants here need ammo to prove that VFP is a viable tool vs. C++ or PB or whatever, fine. Lets talk. My suggestion would be to A) read a book on salesmanship and B) develop a cool demo in VFP that can be used time and time again when applying the skills learned in A).

You're right. VFP has its place. Most likely when I say VC++ is better, I say that in the context of my own situation. To do what you do with macro substitution would require an full blown interpreter. While I have written the basic BASIC interpreter (pardon the pun) for fun, it was dog slow and would have taken a lot of [wasted] effort to make it fast and feature rich. My situation is not like everyone elses. I am writing a fairly small, but powerful app that does not have massive amounts of Code to port.

BTW the current thread started as a comparison of languages, not by me.
