Nope, if all you need is Code 39 and you note the restrictions on what comprises a 'valid' Code 39 barcode, you should be fine. My client lent me a book which detailed the technical formats of the common barcode fonts, I believe it was produced by a company that made scanning equipment. I think on the web site I mentioned they also have some online articles on the technical details of barcoding.
