I'm not sure if this will help, but what happens if you make a view as SELECT * FROM table? Do you get an error as well?

Another try might be to make a SQL-PT connection and use SQLCOLUMNS() on the affected table. I wonder, what will be returned as the field name for the "numeric" field name.
