Another option can be use a field to store a fully unc path and file name in the table. That way you can store the files in different directories and manage the size of the directories based on some rule. Example you store the file based on the month they were created. Looking at this from the os side it might be hard to follow but the file link is in the table. So the file can be retreived quickly. It is just another way to look at it.
