Which stored procedures are you using?

>However, I am trying to do this through the Database Maintenance Wizard and Enterprise Manager will not let you select network drives regardless of privledges. I am guessing the reason they disable this is because Microsoft suggests that you do not (from BOL) back up across the network as this is slower then backing up to a local disk and thereby affects system performance.

Possibly. A common strategy is to backup to the local server and then let the file system backup software move the backup to tape.
