my company uses Filemaker Pro and it is very simple to learn. I built a contact mgmt system with it and our former coach used to use it to track players. We use it here for small apps for single users and it is very efficient. I learned the langueage as I wrote it and bought a book later that I never needed.

I used Filemaker 5.5 and the drawbacks are this

limited data types and no control over field lengths
no use of variables anywhere
every field must be tied to a database
no need to save changes they are done automatically
