I could swear I tried this before and it didn't work but changing the actual step from the lcoal target to the remote target did the trick. Yes, it it is still doing backups over the network but these transaction files tend to be small enough that I don't think it is going to adversley affect the SQL performance. Same as the stored procedure method that I used previously but this way I can just use the Database Maintenance Wizard for ease of use. Thanks for the Q and A.
