I haven't har Direct CD installed for a while, but I seem to recall that you could configure it to only work with one type of media or the other. Of course, nothing would prevent the user from altering the settings.
The only other possibility I can think is maybe in the Windows API to check the media.
Or you could always just leave it up tot he user to put the right kind of disk in, since either way the backup is made and you could restore if required. With the low price of CD-R's these days (sometimes free 25 and 50 packs after rebates), they might want to use the one-use only backups. Al's suggestion of trying to delete a test file will work, although I think once Direct CD starts writing to a CD-R media it's toast for any other use and you might as well go ahead and complete the process at that point - maybe just warn the user that next time they should use a CD-R/W media.
>I routinely back up to RW CD's. All of the usual error traping is in place. However, Is there a way to find out if the cd in the drive is, in fact, RW and not R ? I use "direct CD" and the CD drive appears as a normal drive ie E: Any Ideas ? Thanks in advance.
