"Meta Data" is Data about Data. The idea is to use data to describe other data.

For example a Foxpro Database is a meta data, it holds information about the tables within the database.
It can store information that can't be stored in the table, such as long fieldnames, comments and so on.

The Meta data usualy holds also information about relations and so on.

Since the meta data gives the stucture of data, it can be used for automation of data handling.

So a program using meta data can use the information in the meta for referential integrity, updating data (give a new structure to data)
