I don't think it would evaluate the for condition for each record if he did that. I think it will do the comparison on current record in the new work area. IOW, if the current record causes the FOR clause to evaluate to true, ALL of the records will be appended from the table. Otherwise, none will be appended.

APPEND FROM opens the table by itself; he should leave off the alias in the FOR clause.
