I don't handle it. I tell the client that their system is totally dependant on their server and then recommend that they secure a powerful, fault tolerate server.

The huge supermarket right down the street from me had a major server failure and they were out of business until it got fixed. This is the first and only time it has happened in the 10 years that supermarket has been there. They were down for less than one hour. (Their server is a mini computer).

If a client wants 24/7 dependability then they have to pay for it. There is no free lunch. They are either going to pay a relatively low price for the server hardware or a very high price for your programming.

What you are saying is the same as the client asking, "I want to carry 2 tons of stuff at a time but I only want to buy a 1/4 ton pickup truck." It simply cannot be done.
