I can't say what your problem may be with Ingrid, but as to your question about another tool--I prefer to use a textbox instead of using keystrokes on the grid itself. The reasons are 1-the user can see exactly what they've typed so far, and can backup if they've made a typo and 2-there's no time limit before the incremental search decides it's time to start a new search.
