I had actually read that article a while back. It's pretty ugly. I decided to go with your approach and use Word. It seems that the trick is tweaking the HTML so that it renders it appropriately. Word also has some trouble opening up huge HTML files - i.e. over 2MB. It opens it fine, it's just very, very slow. IE actually had the same problem, but worse.
I'm currently playing with some ways to get around this limitation.
