There are good reasons to migrate to SQL server, but speed is not one of them. Testing is in order to see the real results in your environment.

If you move to SQL, you'll want to set up a dedicated server for it.

If you're not going to need or use SQL stored procedures, you might consider MySql. It's a bit faster than MS SQL but has few of it's high-end capabilities.
