With what capabilities? If you use a wedge-style device, it attaches inline with the keyboard, and a scanned code is treated as if it were keyed, so no special handling is required, it's just text being input.

Cost varies with capability; the least expensive device is a wand, which requires that you make physical contact with the label; LCD devices have a range of a few inches, and laser guns vary from a few inches to a few yards distance. Range costs money. Wireless connections give you some freedom to move around without the need for a cable back to the PC; IR devices generally require line-of-site to an IR receiver, while wireless RF devices can let you wander around at ranges up to a few hundred feet. Again, range costs money; cabled connections are the least expensive, and RF laser guns can run well over $1,000 without getting into the really high-end stuff.

I pretty much stick with the ProScan and Pitney Bowes products, since they're flexible and are built for an industrial environment - eg dropping one on the floor doesn't generally break them, although throwing them against a concrete wall or running them over with a forklift will pretty much take them out. They are not cheap.
