We have implemented, in a very small way, something like this as a solution to the problem of "how do you provide limited access to data from tables that you do not want users to have general (Windows Explorer etc) access to".
It is a simple server application that reads requests for data from secure folders by users. The server can validate the users rights and other security aspects and provide the results back to the user either in the form of a string, temp file reference or an appropriate message.
I think it would be an excellent idea if someone wrote a generic FoxServer application - it could provide a stepping stone for those of us who are hesitant to move into the SQL Server/Oracle world but realise that a server would provide some advantages over the current client based model.
Perhaps this would be an attractive niche for one or more of the framework developers to pursue.
