Andrew,

Sorry that I don't have an answer for you, but I have had a situation very similar to what you describe, though mine is with Word97.

I will often, on Win98SE fully up-to-date, start Word97, see a brief flash of its 'splash' screen, then nothing more EXCEPT that it appears as the active task in the TaskBar.

What I have found I have to do is to right-click it's TaskBar thingy, then click on "Maximize". Then, and only then, do I actually get to see it.
