Hey, Doug. Just perusing this thread out of curiousity during lunch, kind of interesting. I just knew I'd see a thread here when I saw it on the news <g>

For a bit of history, are you all aware there was a very similar debate back when the Gov't decided to put "In God We Trust" on all currency? When the heck was that, during the 1860s, something like that? Before that time, no currency had it, anyway. I'll have to look it up at home, now I'm curious about that date.

Basically what happens (IMO) is there are periods where nationalism & patriotism get very popular and sometimes go a little deeper and bring religion into the mix, and there are enough supporters in DC (Congress, White House, Supreme Court) to make it happen and/or not stop it.

Not saying these things (currency, pledge) are right or wrong (they're very subjective and difficult issues), just noting a very coincidental historical parallel here. Very similar, it was, and both done during times of very strong nationalism.

BTW, this is sort of in the wrong thread title, but what the heck...
