Unfortunately neither will be as fast as DTS because they both hit the SQL log (unless you have logging set to simple). DTS does not log changes so it should be the fastest method.
I'm not particularly thrilled with DTS error communication, for the exact reason you mentioned. It SOUNDS like you shouldn't have any problem. However, you might have maxed out the DB file space (although I think you would have gotten a more specific error) or run into some other odd thing (like maybe a backup kicking off when you tried to do the transfer).
Sorry I can't be of any more help; this sounds like one of those 'you gotta see it work' type of problems.
