I couldn't find a way to do this globally, so I opened a file by specifying the path and name, changed the backup question in properties from yes to no (unchecked it), then exited and restarted and tried the 'Modi file ?' command and picked the same file. No luck. Then tried unchecking all the save options, no luck.

Two more interesting 'features' of this problem - 1) 'Modi file ? noedit' works first time every time 2) 'Modi file ?' will work the first time after rebooting for about 4-5 files, then doesn't ever work. Second time never works. This one-time access was also mentioned in some of the other threads in a slightly different context.

Somehow I have the feeling that this would involve hours on the phone with Novell to resolve - which doesn't seem worth it for something that is pretty much a background noise problem. But thanks for your help...
