Completely agree with you there, Garrett...We have some images of documents in BMP format, and attach them to Reports as Picture Objects (background pictures). We then lay fields on top to give a smooth-looking image.

Theese are rather large and cumbersome but the printed results are great. The size problem is avoided if you use the Path and Exclude them from the Project...
