The origin is that it was a limitation of the FAT file system. Although the 2 GB limit does not exist in newer file systems such as FAT32 and NTFS, FoxPro has not been changed to support files larger than 2 GB. Even worse, it will actually add a "straw that broke the camel's back" record which puts a DBF or FPT file over the limit, rendering it unuseable.
