Gary, welcome to VFP!
Check the books listed here (Classified button, Publications section). Any of them will help, and most have a disk or CD of sample programs to review. Don't worry if the book says VFP3, the basics are identical with VFP5.
Also, check the Tastrade sample program that comes with VFP. There's a lot of good information in it.
Finally, you live in a big city - go to any good bookstore and check the shelves. My local Barnes & Noble had 5 VFP books the last time I looked. That way you can read a couple chapters to see if it looks good.
