Karl, I believe that your question needs to be qualified with the following information: Will you be doing a lot of client-side database manipulation and/or analyses? If the answer is no (i.e., if your application is mainly transaction oriented), then a product like VB provides a bit more flexibility than VFP for front-end development. However, VB's database engine (Jet) sucks compared to VFP. VB's RDO capabilities provide more control over the C/S interface compared to VFP's capabilities (e.g.,, event trapping). However the client-side cursors (batch or otherwise) using RDO are slow compared to VFP.

As for Oracle Lite, I really can't comment. But I can just about guarantee that if you need powerful client-side data manipulation capabilities, particularly with large client-side tables, VFP will outperform anything else out there.
