I've boiled this down to one simple issue in my mind...

... when was the last time that ANY programming language 'owned' by any major corporation was discontinued for any reason but bankruptcy or legal reasons?

I don't know of any? Sure, most have evolved over the years so that they may be very different now, but they are still here.
