You can use the Color Palette toolbar to change the background color as follows:

- Select View | Color Palette toolbar
- Select the object you want to change,
- Make sure the object is set to Transparent Mode
- Select the Background Color button on the color palette toolbar (this is a toggle so make sure the button is depressed.
- Now select the color you want

This should change the background of the selected objects.
