I think you can do that with ADO.NET using the Select method on the Tables collection which returns you a set of rows from the existing data.
I just can't remember whether it works only on a single table current table (ie. it's a table property) or whether you can run it across tables (ie. it's part of the Tables collection). I think both are available actually...
