I use Mysql Daily.
The reason was I needed to make the applications work in a client server enviorment. Meaning to me, I needed my VFP desktop application to run over the internet the same as it ran on a local lan.
Thus My need need to go client server.

The selection of mysql, was based on price, and ease of installation, and maintiance. Using Myfront a great gui front end to the database, you can manage the database without knowing all that much.. Also Mysql is avail on windows platform as well as linux and unix. So putting Mysql on my win2K laptop when traveling, as well has having on actual servers (running linux) was something else I love about it.

But... and I have to stress this. Mysql is not yet, as a robust in features as MS Sql or Oracle or Postgresql. Its lacking in Transactions and Stored Proceedures... So if you use it...do so for the right reasons. I would hate to have someone go down the Mysql Road, only to find that something they really need is not yet supported.

I have posted some of my notes about how to work with it. over on a yahoo group called
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VFPMySql/ it can be helpful in knowing some of the pitfalls I went through.

In the beginning, there was a command prompt, and all was well.
