I just worked with one of my NWA's on a job like this. We did it in stages:
1) We installed Win2K servers.
2) Tne clients then logged through a Win2K script to Novell. We kept passwords and user names the same. Just mapped through the Win2k loggin script.
3) We copied the Novell Apps to the Win2K serverand migrated the drive maps as well.
4) One of the applications had problems on Win2K, so we mapped those users back to the Novell (we had to assign a new drive for this app that was not mapped to novel). We were going to disconnect the Novell server from W2K at that point.

Is the desktop you're concerned with still a Novell client? It sounds like you need to make that desktop a Win2K client.
