Yes, it must be started. An easy way to start samba [smbd] and samba configure [swat] is to open a command window to get the linux prompt. Then at the prompt type setup. A list of option will appear. Select System Services. This will produce a new set to option in a scroll window. Scroll down and make sure to place a x in the smb option and the swat option. Then come out of the setup program and reboot your system. You should then be able to start sambe configuration from the system menu. This assume that the system boot to the GUI as opposed to the text login screen.
