As I see it, you should be required to swear on your honor, maybe on the Constitution, whatever, but not on the Bible which is definitely the Christian kind. There should be no such request or requirement. Or can I swear on the Koran? Torah? Why not the Humanist Manifesto?

I don't know why we have this. As Jim says, you can choose to "affirm" instead if swearing is a problem for you. I'm also pretty sure you can request a Bible more to your liking.
I think the bottom line is we do it because we do it, and no one has ever challenged it severely enough to get rid of it.
