Well, I have to agree with you here, only those of us that have either lived in or visited other countries (and been subject to their laws) truly understand how lucky we are to live here in this country (yes, even with all its faults!).

However, and this is a BIG however: our country allows us this freedom because we fought for it and we continue to fight for it on a daily basis. Fighting for these rights is not just done on the battle field, but everday in communication with your congressman, your senator, via letters, emails, marches, etc. IT is precisely because as a populace we do not sit back and accept everthing the government puts out that it continues to improve and will do so in the future. It is the 'complaining' and the 'taking action' that changes things and KEEPS our country improving, not blind subservice to the powers that be. Granted I do not always agree with the viewpoints of others marching and trying to change things, but I will forever support their right to do so and the government better listen no matter who is that is saying it or what it is they are saying. It is our right to be heard.

Ok, so maybe I came on a little strong in the above paragraph, but I feel strongly about it. I work with and have many friends from other countries that are continually saying that we Americans have absolutely nothing to complain about because we have it so good." Well, I have personally been in third world countries and even other developed countries that I did not appreciate the lack of rights enjoyed while there and the people 'generally' do not complain except to each other. It is because our people will never 'settle' that our country continues to improve.

>Hate to say it, but if you are really peeved enough to make a big deal that your government has an optional pledge that mentions a being you do not believe in, you don't know how lucky you are. don't mean to sound patronising but that's the extent of it.
