In addition to what Jim says about making sure the memvars created by your SCATTER are still in scope, make sure the correct table is the current work area when you SCATTER. If it isn't, the memvars you are expecting to be created won't be.

Also, I understand you are probably just trying to get this working but agree with Craig that buffering is a better way to go than SCATTER/GATHER.
