This ties in to a point I made on another thread -- computer inventories for Dell, Gateway, etc. are at their worst (longest turnover rate) in 10 years.
The hidden cost of implementing .NET (IMO) is not only new machines for developers, but new machines for clients as well, with new Windows OSes throughout the organization. (Note: Yes, one can avoid this to a degree with ASP.NET. But MSFT doesn't have a 200 million ad budget specifically for ASP.NET, it's for the whole shooting match...). Ergo, since new machines aren't happening, .Net isn't happening, either. Simple as that.
Long term, who knows. But for the short to medium term, the only revolution regarding .NET is recognizing MSFT's wasteful, belligerent and embarrassing marketing campaigns...
