This problem seems to only happen with the character field contains a series of strings that begin with the same characters; if we force the first few characters to be unique, everything works fine.

This rings a bell with me -- I seem to recall this being fixed in VFP7 Service Pack 1 (although I could be wrong). The key issue was having an index with a lot of records having the first N characters being the same and certain settings of free memory.
