I wouldn't just blame the Internet in this case. I suppose I would think that to any degree, where people are told, "Don't ask questions, just believe", I'd be in opposition. IMO that's just plain nutty.

Yes, of course. We all are learning but this nonsense of name calling as a supposed substitute for reasoning is just plain silly. And, as you suggest, people do say silly thing in the heat of the discussion.
